GALAXY OF TERROR (1981)

A future space-faring civilization is controlled by a near omnipotent being called The Master. The Master sends a crew to the planet Morganthus, ostensibly for a rescue operation, but in reality so he can "test" them to find his successor. Testing involves having the various crewmembers brought face-to-face with a physical manifestation of their fears, which the pyramid-like building they are trapped in can telepathically detect. All the crewmembers die gruesome deaths eventually except for two, one of whom takes The Master's place at the end of the film. The film itself was one of a number of "alien-esque" films made in the aftermath of Alien combining sci-fi and horror. Purposely or not, the film plays on mental concepts more than the typical horror, slasher-type of film, although it does so in a violent and gratuitous way. Recent films, such as Event Horizon and The Sphere, have tried this same approach with a much larger budget and less effect.

I could go on and on about this one...nice setup with the "stalking" sequence; unless most monster movies, this one actually pays off in a big way...in real time, the scene goes by pretty quick...it would be nice if it were a bit slower, but the frenetic pace does add to the excitement...one gets an idea of how much time and effort went into the scene when you view it frame-by-frame...most of the action actually occurs in a logical sequence, including the stripping off of clothing, and the rape itself...O'Connell is very beautiful, plus she's completely covered in an oily, slimy sheen... since this scene helped write the scale (and create the site), its probably about as high as any scene can expect to score, outside of a really well-done adult scene...while full nudity isn't shown, for all intents and purposes, O'Connell is completely nude for this one; it certainly looks that way, and there's no doubt as to what's happening with her and the worm due to sound and movements...the monster is a great creation, apparently operated by three guys.
